Focused on business learning, with practical tools and tips to take away and implement in your organisation.

Programme Highlights

Tourism is New Zealand’s biggest industry, biggest employer and biggest export earner. Since 2014, it has also been New Zealand’s fastest growing economic contributor.

Our success has created both opportunities and challenges, for the industry and our communities. So how do we respond?

Join us for a thought provoking day with a mix of speakers, a panel discussion and audience participation. The day focuses on three key areas:

  • Why we should care about sustainability
  • What tourism should look like in the future
  • How we can improve public understanding of our industry

The day commences at 9am and concludes at 3pm, with networking drinks until 4.30pm. So even if you live outside Queenstown, you’ll still be able to join us without the additional cost of an overnight stay.

Acting responsibly now will equip the tourism industry to be successful in the long term. That’s where the New Zealand Tourism Sustainability Commitment comes into play. This session will inspire you to sign up to the Commitment and play your part in creating a truly sustainable tourism industry.

TIA is undertaking a reset of the Tourism 2025 Growth Framework to reflect the significant changes seen in the industry in the past few years. What should be the focus for the industry’s guiding document? Let us know what you think tourism should look like in 2025.

Specialists from outside tourism share their perceptions of our industry. They have some fascinating ideas on how we can correct misconceptions and improve public understanding of the vital role we play in supporting New Zealand-wide economic growth.

Chris Roberts, Chief Executive, Tourism Industry Aotearoa will then moderate a lively panel discussion.

Chris Roberts, Chief Executive, TIA

Michelle Templer, Chief Executive, Destination Rotorua

Chris joined TIA as Chief Executive in July 2014. Previously he was a General Manager at Tourism New Zealand, with responsibility for government and stakeholder relations.

Chris began his working life as a radio journalist. From senior editor roles at Radio New Zealand he moved to Parliament, which included working for the Minister of Tourism. Chris was involved in the development of the New Zealand Tourism Strategy 2010, the first attempt to have a collaborative industry strategy.

His time in the Beehive was followed by a decade of senior corporate affairs roles in the energy sector before returning to tourism.

Michelle is Chief Executive of Rotorua Economic Development trading as Destination Rotorua whose purpose is to help improve the Rotorua economy and its ability to create employment, wealth and wellbeing for all of our people.   Under the overarching umbrella of “destination development” Michelle oversees Destination Rotorua’s activities and relationships focused on Business Development, Investment Attraction, Tourism Growth and Visitor Services.

Most recently, Michelle was Regional Director Australia Pacific, Trade Commissioner UK & Ireland and Coalitions Manager at New Zealand Trade and Enterprise and has been based in Sydney, London, Madrid and Auckland.  At the heart of her roles was leading work to support the growth of New Zealand companies together with assisting strategic investors realise opportunities in New Zealand.  

Michelle brings broad experience in the private sector having worked in in FMCG, Agriculture and the Tourism sector.  She is currently a Partner of an Agribusiness and loving living in Rotorua.

Steffan Panoho, Head of Tourism at ATEED

Graham Budd, Chief Executive, Destination Queenstown

Steffan Panoho is the Head of Tourism at Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED). Steffan is an experienced tourism leader with an excellent track record for promoting Auckland.

Steffan's career in tourism marketing and product development spans two decades, and includes previous roles at Tourism Auckland (which became part of ATEED in 2010 during the creation of the Super City), and running his own tourism business in Rotorua.

During his time at ATEED to date, Steffan has led the development of world-class tourism trade marketing and premium visitor attraction strategies for Auckland, which have delivered significant growth in high-value visitation to the region.

Steffan is passionate about Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland and has great connections in the tourism industry here and abroad.

Graham Budd has been Chief Executive of Destination Queenstown since May 2012. 

As CEO, his responsibilities entail driving the strategic direction and management of the organisation and ensuring all marketing strategies are in line with Destination Queenstown’s business plan.  He is Chair of Regional Tourism New Zealand (RTNZ) and on the Tourism Industry Aotearoa board of directors.

Graham has more than 25 years of marketing experience, including five with Destination Queenstown as General Manager of Marketing, prior to his promotion to CEO.

He also has a strong corporate background in developing and executing targeted brand strategies and marketing plans and managing teams of varying sizes. 

Originally from Wellington, Graham has previously held marketing and management positions for leading multinational companies including Unilever, Wrightson, Colgate Palmolive, Lexis Nexis and General Cable.  

Joanna Norris, Chief Executive, ChristchurchNZ

Bruce Bassett, Industry Strategy Manager, TIA

Joanna Norris is the Chief Executive of ChristchurchNZ, the new economic development and city profile agency charged with igniting bold ambition for Õtautahi Christchurch.   Previously Joanna was the Editor of the Press and South Island Editor in Chief for Fairfax Media.

Joanna joined ChristchurchNZ in October 2017 and is passionate about the city and region and the role of ChristchurchNZ to ignite excitement, connect changemakers and grow confidence.  An ardent city leader, Joanna is focussed on growing the city’s reputation as a vibrant and exciting place surrounded by mountains and beaches - a place where our people explore new ideas and ways of living and innovate in business, technology and society.

She believes each generation has a responsibility to care for the built, natural, economic and social heritage that it inherits and to explore ways to improve lives through inclusive prosperity.

Bruce joined the TIA advocacy team in July 2015. He is responsible for providing thought leadership to assist TIA in identifying future trends and the responses required from the tourism industry.  Key tasks to be tackled over the next years includes the Tourism 2025 Reset project, embedding the Tourism Sustainability Commitment and advancing the implementation of the Tourism Insight Framework.

Bruce joined TIA after working as Director of Strategy & Communications at Quitline, which helps people to stop smoking.

Bruce has extensive tourism-related experience, having held a number of policy and research roles within the public sector, including Research Manager in the former Ministry of Tourism.

Phil Tate, Consultant Futurist, Simplicitate

Andy Hamilton, CEO, The Icehouse

Phil has a strong reputation for providing sharp insight into critical trends affecting organisations today. As a consultant futurist, he helps clients understand the interaction of these trends in order to challenge existing thinking and build innovative approaches to navigating the road ahead.

A former senior executive with BNZ and New Zealand Post, Phil has significant experience in strategic management and planning, and has a keen interest in the major drivers of organisational change. He works with teams to help them assess these drivers and develop resilient and sustainable strategies and plans.

He completed his foresight training at the University of Houston and has been a member of the Association of Professional Futurists for the last six years. Added to this is a keen environmental focus through his earlier training through Al Gore’s Climate Reality programme and current study as a regenerative practitioner.

Phil is regarded as a visionary and has supported many large programmes and organisations with future-thinking and future scenario development. He is sought after for his deep and broad body of knowledge and passion for sustainable solutions to today’s problems.

Andy Hamilton is CEO of The Icehouse which is a New Zealand organisation focused on unleashing the potential of Kiwi business owners and entrepreneurs. The Icehouse works with start-ups, investors, owners of established Kiwi SME and their staff together with advisors, supporters and their families to enable this potential to be achieved.

Over 17 years The Icehouse has worked with a range of Kiwi tourism companies including Jucy Group, Go Rentals, Snap Rentals, Wilderness Motor Homes, Kiwi Camper Vans, Hotel Coachman, Distinction Hotels, Magic Memories, Sky Dive Wanaka, Methven Travel, Tourism Adventures, Gilpin Travel and Active Adventures.

Andy is a regular commentator of business in New Zealand and a member of angel investment network IceAngels and an investor in Tuhua Ventures, a seed and angel investment fund established by The Icehouse. He is an investor in Blue Frog Breakfast and FaceMe, a developer of digital employees, the latter of which he is also a director.


Maree Baker-Galloway, Partner, Anderson Lloyd


Anderson Lloyd provides legal and strategic advice to some of New Zealand's largest tourism operators and many small and medium operators, in Queenstown and nationally.

Maree Baker-Galloway's experience with tourism operators is wide ranging, and as an industry generally she is drawn to working for them due to the positive, proactive nature of the individuals involved.

Maree supported her university years as a sea kayak guide in the Abel Tasman National Park for 5 seasons, and during her OE in the USA was a white water guide in Jackson Hole. After getting that out of her system she moved into her legal career, but remained drawn to tourism operations. Highlights include: rezoning the Kaikoura Peninsula to the "Kaikoura Peninsula Tourism Zone", working with Heritage Expeditions Limited on various matters relating to their expeditions to the Sub-Antarctic Islands and working with various concessionaires helping them deal with the Department of Conservation.

Over 3 years ago Maree transferred to Anderson Lloyd's Queenstown office to focus further on the tourism market and is now part of the team advising big and small players in that market including ski areas, accommodation providers and many of the activities tourists travel to Queenstown to experience.
